SURESH NAGANATHAN
Street and Documentary Photographer Based in Mumbai, India
“I photograph strangers because I find them fascinating. I photograph them candidly because no matter how imaginative I am, the unplanned things they do will always exceed my expectations. The more I photograph the world around me, the more it teaches me about my surroundings and my own self.”
Suresh Naganathan is a street and documentary photographer based in Mumbai, India. Born in Switzerland in 1980, he relocated to India in 2008, reconnecting with the country of his parents. Immersed in the intensity, noise, and density of everyday life in India, he began photographing in 2014 as a way to navigate and understand the chaos around him.
For over a decade, Suresh has explored the streets of Mumbai and beyond, developing a long-term photographic practice rooted in observation, human presence, and the emotional rhythms of urban life. His street photography and documentary work have been published internationally, including features in Creative Image Magazine and Eyeshot.
In 2022, Suresh Naganathan was selected as a winner of the Eyeshot Open Call, which led to the publication of his first photography monograph, A World Called Mumbai, released in 2024. Distributed internationally, the book is a bittersweet visual love letter to Mumbai, a city that continues to shape his vision.
In November 2025, Suresh was awarded the Portrait Prize at the Indian Photo Festival, India’s most prestigious photography festival.
Alongside his personal projects, Suresh regularly conducts street photography workshops in Mumbai and across India, and maintains an extensive collection of photography books that inform and inspire his practice.
